Recommended Reading: How ‘Succession’ Picks The Perfect Watches For Its Characters (Hint: We Helped)
Watches have been a part of HBO’s hit series Succession ever since the pilot episode when future son-in-law Tom Wambsgans gifts patriarch Logan Roy a Patek Philippe (“it’s incredibly accurate; every time you look at it, it tells you how rich you are”). Since then, the show’s fashion has become a trend in itself, single-handedly thrusting eye-roll-inducing phrases like “quiet luxury” and “stealth wealth” into the public consciousness. Succession’s iconic looks and fashion got there by putting a whole lot of thought and effort into every single piece that went on a character even if – especially if – it was on their wrist.
For the fourth and final season, which ends on Sunday, May 28, the show tapped Hodinkee’s own Managing Editor (and the brains behind Watching Movies) Danny Milton to help inform which watches characters should wear. Danny worked with the show’s prop master to draft multi-page documents on the personality of each character, then provided a list of potential watches for them.
GQ talked to Danny about how the whole process, including how it put a modern Rolex “Pepsi” GMT Master II on Cousin Greg’s wrist this season:
“‘They wanted a Rolex for him,’ Milton told [GQ’s Cam Wolf]. Succession viewers will know that Greg already owned a Rolex Submariner that he wildly overpaid a dealer for after Kendall pressured him to upgrade his wristwear. ‘So I had a sense of his character being into modern Rolex,’ Milton said. ‘My mind immediately just went to Pepsi
